Portions of a documentary were released recently on YouTube in which former vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin speaks out against the media influence of the recent presidential election. In the interview Palin notes that both actress Tina Fey and news anchor Katie Couric received bumps in their ratings at her expense. The interview is a part of a forthcoming release from John Ziegler which analyzes the role the media played in the election results and the information that was disseminated.
Ziegler’s website lists out several surveys which indicate that the information retained about the candidates among supporters of Obama was biased in favor of Obama. For instance, the poll revealed that among Obama supporters, most could not identify which party was in control of Congress and thus responsible for the policies passed in the last two years. In fact, most of the Obama supporters interviewed believed that it was the Republicans who were in control of Congress. Nearly all of those interviewed correctly identified Sarah Palin as the candidate who had a pregnant teenage daughter and for whom the campaign had spent six figures on clothes, indicating the media did a very good job at getting these points across. Disturbingly, most of the Obama supporters who were interviewed also claimed that it was Sarah Palin who stated that she could see Russia from her house, a statement that was actually made by actress Tina Fey. (For the record, Palin stated that Russia can be seen from some parts of Alaska.)
As an example of mishaps not covered in the media, the candidate who claimed that he has campaigned in 57 states was identified as Sarah Palin or John McCain by Obama supporters, although it was actually Barak Obama who made this statement. Likewise Obama supporters identified the candidate who had to withdraw from a previous campaign because of plagiarism as McCain or Palin, when in reality it was Joe Biden who resigned from the Dukakis campaign in 1987.
This study shows that those that many of those who cast their vote for Obama were influenced by media tactics which did not portray the candidates equally.
