I’ve had many conversations with many people with views more liberal than mine over whether Fox News distorts politics. Now we have a presidential candidate, Barack Obama, claiming that Fox News is lowering his poll percentages. He has hundreds of media outlets showering him with praise and accolades, and a single station reporting on, well, something other than praise and accolades. And this single station is lowering his poll percentages? Those non-fans of Fox News that I know don’t watch the channel. So I find Obama’s comments perplexing. Is he claiming that the media should not question anything about him? Is Obama claiming that if more of the media reports on the negatives about his past and his policies that his poll numbers would decrease? Welcome to McCain’s world. The guy can’t get a fair story with the rest of the media.
Sure Fox has its heavy hitting right wing conservative team with Hannity, O’Reilly and now Huckabee. It has its heavy hitting left wing liberal Colmes, and many people previously from more liberal stations like Van Susteren and Rivera. I believe the network strives to provide a “fair and balanced” approach to news. I also believe that the Fox News network doesn’t automatically view all things conservative as evil, unlike every other media outlet in the United States.
During the campaign, I’ve seen the news anchors holding stop watches to ensure Obama’s speeches are receiving the same amount of coverage as McCain. I’ve heard many of the reporters defending both candidates when a guest makes an allegation that goes over the line. And I’ve seen stories on somewhat negative topics about both candidates. Only McCain’s negatives are reported on the other networks. Obama has been self-admittedly cast as the “Messiah.”
I’m suspect when a network does not report on any positive aspects of a political candidate or political party. I empathise with Cindy McCain, as my local newspaper did to me what the New York Times did to her. In a recent political campaign the paper conveniently focused on my critics and left out all of the good deeds and accomplishments of my life, while highlighting those of my opponent, whom it endorsed. I am glad to see the McCain campaign bringing this same tactic to the attention of whoever will listen.
I respect Barack Obama and am impressed with everything about him, except his political views. I more than anyone would like for him to be the messiah, make my life better; fill my bank account with money, lower gas and grocery prices and send record breaking crowds to my restaurant. However I do not believe this can be accomplished by increasing taxes on everyone making more than $250k a year or making employers responsible for providing health insurance for their employees. Vice Presidential candidate, Joe Biden has forecast a major international terrorist incident will test Obama in the first six months of his Presidency. With his opposition to the military I don’t feel confident that Obama is the one for the job. The mainstream media needs to focus less on the “Messiah” aspect, and more on the candidates’ solutions to the problems that our country is facing. If it’s too much to be fair and balanced, how about just fair?
