The Other Side of the Story
Yesterday I received an e-mail from the Eagle Chamber of Commerce president informing me that the Chamber had nothing to do with the Eagle Informer. Terri Bath stated that the Chamber merely sends the Eagle Informer press releases, as it does with all of the other publications in and around Eagle. She also made a statement that the Chamber supports ALL business in Eagle. I tend to disagree with her on that particular comment and I’ll write more on that in another post.
A phone call this evening from the Eagle Informer publisher revealed another angle to the Boise Weekly’s article. First of all, I give Mary Defayette credit for bothering to call me in the first place. That puts her a step above Phil Bandy in my book. Phil hasn’t attempted to communicate with me before, during or after the election. (Although I do hear he is a fan of my blog.)
Mary politely pointed out that what is written in a newspaper is not always true, and used the articles in the Idaho Statesman during my mayoral campaign as an example. Okay, I’ll give her that one. She admitted she did use the term “The Haters,” but that it wasn’t directed towards anyone in particular. She also said that she was not political in any way and truly meant the Eagle Informer to be simply a tool for the City and local businesses to broadcast information about upcoming events. Kind of a “just the facts” and no opinion type of magazine.
Mary indicated that she would be submitting a comment here on my blog in the next few days in an attempt to clear up the misunderstanding, so instead of me paraphrasing the details of our conversation maybe we’ll hear it from the publisher herself. Stay tuned!

Saundra,
I cant buy some of this. If someone is thoughtless enough to call nearly half of a city population HATERS, it will take more than an “OOPS!” to fix that. Maybe an actual “I’m Sorry I was wrong.” is more in order. That IS NOT unbiased reporting, and if she is printing news that is not true, she has nobody to blame but herself or her reporters, whatever the case may be. Just becaue the Statesman does it, she thinks it’s OK? Wrong is wrong, and when you assume the position of informing people you have to perform twice the fact checking, not half.

VOE
COMMENT FROM SAUNDRA: Just a quick clarification because I wasn’t clear in my original post: The point the Eagle Informer publisher was making in her Statesman analogy was that the Boise Weekly article was wrong and that the Boise Weekly had printed information about Mary Defayette which was not accurate.
